Hope by Vampire Weekend: A Mantra for Emotional Overwhelm
For those that are feeling overwhelmed, this is the song for you. But Hope by Vampire Weekend is not just a song, it is a chant, a mantra.
Like a lot of people, I struggle with emotional overwhelm. And there are endless things across our personal, professional, and global existence that are hard to let go of or shake. Our phones and devices have only exacerbated this. Endless alerts and notifications, and a window into more information than we were meant to process.
So we carry it, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Our nervous system works overtime to compensate, but the load is simply too much.
I often ask clients if they move through the airport grabbing everyone else's bags. They, of course, look at me almost incredulously that I would even suggest this - and I point out the obvious silliness of such a suggestion. I mean, you wouldn't make it very far carrying things that you physically can't carry.
So why do we do it emotionally?
Maybe that's why I keep coming back to this song.
This song is nearly eight minutes of reminding us that there is very little we can control. Yet, we feel burdened by it all.
Make this song a daily repeat listen until you hear the voice in your head telling you -
I hope you let it go.
I hope you let it go.
